Phonetics: Manners of Articulation 1.1

This is an introductory-level exercise providing practice for determining the manners of articulation of consonants. Remember that these features describe how articulators in the vocal tract create spaces through which airflow passes. The main parameter in discussing manners of articulation is the proximity of articulators that results in various degrees of stricture or occlusion.

There is debate as to how to classify manners of articulation. In this introductory-level exercise, the questions focus on Standard English and the following manners: oral stops/plosives, affricates, fricative, *liquids, nasal stops, and glides.

For each question, you will be presented a manner of articulation and be asked to select the symbol that represents the sound with the requested manner.

The chart that is included in the explanation frame refers to /l, ɹ/ as approximants. Although they may be referred to as such for specific purposes, we will label them as liquids.

*That which constitutes a liquid is also a matter of debate. For simplicity, we will consider /l, ɹ/ liquids, but later on, at a more advanced level, you will see that /ɹ/ patterns more like an approximate.
