Remember that stress is contrastive in English; thus, when a shift in stress occurs, either the meaning of the word is altered, or a non-word is uttered.
In Standard English, all lax vowels in an unstressed syllable are reduced to schwa. Also, remember that tense vowels, although found in the nucleus of an unstressed syllable, are not reduced to schwa. It is not always intuitive for native speakers to perceive stress patterns since these are acquired early as a lexical feature and are uttered unconsciously.
