Phonology: Introduction to Classes 1.1

This exercise is designed to help you classify consonants based on shared features. As an introductory level exercise, you will be categorizing sounds by the major classes [consonantal/syllabic] and [obstruent/sonorant] and the manner class [+/-continuant]. Some of these questions are true/false, others are multiple choice. Here at LingNet we use the term [+/-syllabic] unless the feature [consonantal] is needed for further clarification. Thus remember that [-syllabic] is synonymous with/similar to [+consonantal] and vice versa. The same thinking applies to [obstruent/sonorant]. The default class used is [+/-sonorant] whereas [obstruent] is used only when needed for further clarification. Thus [-sonorant] is synonymous with/similar to [+obstruent].
