Speech Disorders: Child's Speech Sample 1
This exercise provides you with practice in transcribing children’s impaired speech. There are 4 steps involved.
- First: Listen to the full speech sample below in order to contextualize each speech sample.
- Second: Complete questions 1-8, writing out the broad transcriptions of the underlined portions of the text. Remember that the broad transcription is the representation of speech sounds that is abstract, or what the speaker believes s/he is producing, before the application of phonological rules. Broad transcriptions are enclosed with slashes, e.g., / /.
- Third: Listen to the shortened clips of the speaker and write out the narrow transcriptions of each utterance. Remember that the narrow transcription is the representation of speech sounds that is actually being articulated, after the application of phonological rules. Narrow transcriptions are enclosed with brackets, e.g., [ ].
- Fourth: Click on the response to see the broad and narrow transcriptions of each and compare them to your responses.
