In English, there are various types of Adverbial Phrases (AdvPs.) AdvPs often modify verbs (ran 'quickly') and may modify AdjPs, in which case they attach to the left of the modified adjective ('very' big). AdvPs may be recursive, containing multiple adverbs. In addition, there are phrasal AdvPs that modify VPs, which usually follow the VP; that is, they attach to the right in tree diagrams. Sentential AdvPs modify entire sentences, and generally come at the beginning of the sentence, attaching to the left. Draw trees for each of the AdvP below and then check your answers (given in simple and X-bar forms). You will draw phrasal AdvPs in the first half of this exercise and sentential AdvPs in the second half.
