Syntax: Simple Sentences

Creating a syntactic tree representation for an entire sentence involves combining several components. Sentences need both an NP (as subject) and a VP. For the most basic intransitive verbs, a sentence may be as short as two words, though the addition of modifiers can greatly expand this type of structure. Both the subject NP and the VP attach to a higher node in the tree, labeled “S” in simple form.
